Review

This was my first audiobook.

The narrator (Julia Motyka) was a bit too slow for my taste. I also feel like she was overly dramatic in some parts.

The storyline is clichéd. But this one was overly sugar-coated, which made it slightly boring sometimes. The book was too long. It could have been shorter if they'd taken out some unnecessary parts and had too much (and unnecessary) foul language.

PROLOGUE

Why does anything happen the way it does? Because a grand purpose works in everything. Unfortunately mankind ceased long ago to trust a grand purpose. In trust’s place we wanted control.

As I look back on our past achievements, I wonder why we did it to ourselves. I wonder why the bloodshed, the destruction, or the terror of war had to be. Perhaps the most troubling fact I see is that there is no single point in time that can be scrutinized and blamed. Our fate built upon itself throughout our entire race’s existence, and each generation’s bite of the forbidden fruit brought us closer to hell on earth.

Throughout time, we strove to know too much and then to abuse what we learned. We refused to be what we were meant to be, and we tried to control our destinies by taking each moment into our own hands. The whole of our history seems to be filled with more pain than was needed, but, as a species, we fought what was meant for us and decided for ourselves how life should be. We did not appreciate that we were part of a bigger plan. We tried to control life.

On the fortunate side of things, we were never abandoned. An age once existed when miracles flowed freely to guide us, but in these latter days the miracles diminished as man grew bolder in his rebellion. Through it all the grand purpose kept ticking, and the miraculous was never taken away, only hidden. We thought we were on our own, but we never were. We were given hints and helps, but it was largely up to our finite minds as to how we interpreted their meaning. The grand design always allowed our choices of will to play a part in the workings of fate. That is the greatest blessing of the grand purpose – we are never left without a choice. Just as we are given the freedom to choose evil, so we are given the freedom to choose good. Free will can bring us to dust as a species, but it can also bring us to redemption. We are given the power to change mankind’s daily fate for better or for worse, and we are never abandoned in this choice.

Despite the miracles offered to generation after generation, mankind still chose to live as we saw fit and ignore anything outside ourselves. Think back. The conduct of Cain and Abel was not a one-time occurrence, nor was that of Romulus and Remus or the Karamazov brothers. Two brothers formed into different races so that, in the end, the races didn’t even remember they were of the same blood. Each man ran to his own corner of existence, forming his own world and calling all others alien. We repeatedly abused every gift given to us and yet scorned those who came before us for doing the same.

Mankind as a whole chose to continue down this road of self-destruction and ignore – no, worse than that – defy faith in anything beyond our control. I accept as true, also, that somewhere in the back of our minds we never really believed we would get what we deserved. But, we have always created our own destruction. However stupid we were, free will was always given. Even as our world crumbled under our pounding fists, man still had the twisted right to destroy himself. So, we were at last allowed to take life from ourselves.

I myself am not immune to man’s pride, but I have been blessed with objective hindsight in ways you cannot yet imagine. This is why I am recording this history: I know that, however far we have fallen from what we were meant to be, there is always a grand purpose behind everything, and it works for our benefit if we follow its path. Specifically, this record will highlight the story of some who accepted and followed what the rest of mankind cast aside. These flawed heroes were given a choice, and the grand purpose worked itself out through them in miraculous ways.

So, I hope to give you a glimpse of how and why this particular history of these particular heroes played out as it did – there was more to what happened than what was in their hands. Learn from their lives. Above all, remember not to control life. Trust, and let whatever happens happen.

About The Author

Sunshine Somerville lives in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She graduated from Cornerstone University and was awarded the 2004 English Award for Excellence, also self-publishing her first book that year.

She began “The Kota Series” when she was nine, basing the story on what she, her brother, and their two best friends played out in the woods while their mothers wondered if they might be taking it a little too seriously. Fast-forward 20+ years later, and Sunshine still probably spends too much time thinking about time-travel, superpowers, heroes and villains, zombies, and alien planets.

My Review
I love the cover

Becky Brandon(neé Bloomwood) got on my nerves a lot. She's very selfish and self-involved in the beginning. Plus her annoying, incessant and unnecessary lies.

I wish there was more Luke in the book and Minnie is an annoying child.

I've read every book in the Shopaholic series now and this is my least favourite one.
Becky was too childish. I don't get why she kept on lying and was forcing Luke's secretary to ask him personal stuff.

Other than that, I enjoyed the book. its usual Kinsella. The perfect chick lit and humour story.

Blog Tour: In The Beginning by Abby L Vandiver [Guest Post, Excerpt & Giveaway]

Guest Post

He Said, She Said

Good dialogue is one of the backbones of a good book. It’s used to reveal characters’ personality, their relationships with each other, to advance the plot, moving the story forward, and sets the mood and the tension of the story Without it your book would be stilted and tedious. You need to take the time to develop and be sure to always include good dialogue in your book. But don’t let that make you nervous, dialogue is also fun to write.

Use Dialogue to Define Your Character
You’ve heard the saying, “Show, don’t tell.” Well, the same thing goes for your describing your character’s personality. Instead of saying, “She’s spoiled,” you can use dialogue of her plotting or crying to get her way. Instead of telling that the bad guy is – well bad, develop his personality through his dialogue. Here, you can write his dialogue to be cold and calculating while he’s talking to another character. You can also use that same dialogue to show whether the person he’s speaking with is fearful of him or not. Your readers are smart. Let them know that you know they are. Engage them. Lead them in the direction you want them to go with the dialogue you use not by telling them what you want them to know.

Additionally, adding beats around the dialogue helps to develop your character’s personality as well. Such as writing that while a character is being chastised, “he gnawed on his nails.” Or, that while talking, “she stood, legs apart, with her hands on her hips.” But too many beats can be detrimental to a string of dialogue. You’ll lose the “back and forth” of it taking away, losing its realistic quality.

Be Careful Using Tags
The best tag to use after a sentence of dialogue, if you are going to use one, is “said.” Most people when they speak “say” the words. Now you may say, “Duh. Everyone knows that.” But you’ll find that many written works have characters “sighing,” “laughing,” and “exclaiming” their words. For instance, “I’ve had such a long day,” she sighed. Where it is better to say, “I’ve had such a long day,” she said and sighed. Or, “You’re kidding,” he laughed. Yep, you got it, it’s better to write, “You’re kidding,” he said and laughed. Bet now you know the best way to use that pesky, “he exclaimed.” (Hint: Don’t.)

And it’s okay to use “said” over and over (and over) in your novel. You don’t need to change up. Believe me it won’t make the book boring. I am not saying don’t ever use tags, some, such as “bellowed” and “mumbled” are actually how a person would say the words. Of course, “asked,” “replied,” and “questioned,” are always good, too. My advice, however, is to use tags, other than “said,” sparingly.

Use Dialogue to Make Information Dumps Less Boring
More often than not, to advance your story, you need to describe a history of something, or a give a back story to a place and you need to write a big, ole’ long paragraph (or two) to do it. That can knock a reader right out of the pull of your story. A good way to unload that information is to include it in dialogue. Let one of the characters tell about the history or the back story to another character. It may not always appropriate for the scene (the character being told would already know this information), but where it is, it’ll make the “dump” a lot less boring

.

Book Excerpt – Chapter Thirty Three

Time slowed down and started to drag. People and things were moving in slow motion, their mouths opened yelling at me, but I couldn’t understand what they were saying. I felt like I was in a vacuum and I couldn’t get out.
The car drove home on auto pilot. Pulling in my driveway, I saw Mase’s car. Now, I’d have to try and explain it to him.
I stared at the notebook sitting on the seat next to me. Still. Inanimate. Yet, it mocked me. I wish I could just make it go away.
Finally, I grabbed the notebook and got out of the car. When I went in the house Mase was sitting at the kitchen table eating a bowl of cereal and reading a magazine.

“Where’re the kids?” I figured I would try this “calm” act again.
“They’re off somewhere.”
I looked over at him. He was sitting there, eating his bowl of cereal. Not a care in the world. For some reason that made me mad.
“Mase.” I shouted his name. He looked at me startled. “Now, I guess when I cook you won’t be hungry.” He attempted to protest but had a mouth full of cereal and muffled words tumbled out. I walked over to the sink and there were several other dishes, skillets and pots in the sink. I really didn’t think I’d been gone that long.

“So what, Mase?” I pointed to the sink. “The cereal is your dessert?”
“I’ll eat whatever you cook.”
“Yeah, I bet you will,” I said.
I hadn’t planned on cooking anyway.
“Where’ve you been?” He asked casually.
“I went to work. Then I just kinda drove around for a while then went to see Greg at his office.” I tried to be causal, too.
“Yeah, Greg called. Said you were having some kind of nervous breakdown or something right in his office.”
“He said that?”
“Yep.”
“What’d you say?”
“Just told him I would check out our medical coverage to make sure it covered mental health. I told him that I would never leave you just because you had become mentally unsound, but just in case, maybe he should draw up some papers for us before you become fully incompetent.”
I mustered up a smile.

“So you want to tell me about this? Or do you want to just go around flipping out in the middle of Downtown Cleveland and keep it to yourself?”
I looked at him. One gift my husband had always given me was his time and understanding. He would listen to me attentively, and he would hear what I was saying. Walking over to the kitchen table I sat down.
“It’s about the manuscripts.” I laid the notebook on the table and pushed it toward him.
He nodded. “Yeah, I’m listening.”
I started to cry. Again.

“You know the notebook that I got from Mrs. Margulies contained the copy of the manuscript that I found in Jerusalem, right?” He nodded. “Well, once I translated it, I found that it contained some very surprising -” I took a deep breath. “Some very disturbing information.”
“Why are you crying?”
“I don’t know. I guess I’m scared.”
“Scared of what? Is this information that terrible?”
“Yes. No. I don’t know. I don’t think so but I’m the only one in the world who knows this. I’m a historian and now I know something that I don’t want to tell anyone. I want to hide it. To put it in a cave in the middle of the desert and pray that no one finds it. Ever.” I stood up as I talked and began to pace the floor like I had done in Greg’s office.

Mase watched me. “So, why can’t you tell anyone?”
“Because.”
“Because?”
“Because no one would believe me. Everyone would think I’m crazy.”
“A lot of us already do.”
“And, ridicule me.” I hoped no one had been ridiculing me.
“Really?”
“Yes, really and we, well at least I, would be the laughing stock of the century, of all eternity.” I started to cry more. I went over in front of the kitchen sink and leaned against the counter.
“Don’t cry, Justin.” He got up and came and stood in front of me. Wiping my tears with the palm of his hand, he put his arm around me.

“It’s what I found out.” I looked up at him. “They played God, Mase.”
“Who played God?”
“I can’t explain it. I couldn’t explain it to Greg. I don’t think I can explain it to anyone. Here, you read it.” I walked over to the kitchen table picked up the notebook and offered it to Mase. Instead he grabbed my hand and headed out of the kitchen.
“How about if we go to your study? We can talk more comfortably there. I have a feeling it’s going to be a long night.”
“Well, we’ll get interrupted soon enough.” I wiped the tears out of my eyes and looked down at my watch. “The kids will probably come in any minute. I’m surprised they’re not here already.”
“No they won’t interrupt. They won’t be here.” I looked at him. “After Greg called and told me that you had lost all of your marbles and was headed home, I had Claire come and get them. They’re spending the night with her.”
I smiled at him. He’s so smart. I feel so bad that he has such a crazy wife. He really doesn’t deserve all of the grief I pile up on him.
“Did you tell her about my little breakdown?”
“Babe, we all know how you are. Really, it’s okay.”
“Speaking of which, maybe I should call Greg and let him know I made it home okay.”
“I already called him. I called after I saw you sitting out in the driveway.”
“You saw me sitting out there?” He nodded. “And you didn’t say anything?”
“Nope. Figured you’d come in the house eventually. And, even if you didn’t, I thought I could at least let Greg know you weren’t out there somewhere, in your car, hysterical, runnin’ over folks.”
I had acted a little bizarre.

“So, before I start reading this thing,” he took the notebook from me, “why don’t you tell me about it first?” We walked into my study and he pulled off my jacket, threw it across my desk and sat me down in a chair.
“Ha, I don’t even know how or where to begin.”
“Well, I guess the Mad Hatter said it best -” “Start at the beginning, go until you get to the end and then stop. Or something like that, right?”
“Right.” He nodded, smiling.
I knew exactly what he was thinking. I was beginning to get as corny as Mase.

The Interview
How many books are in The Astral Ordinance series? Do you have a plan or will you just go with the flow.
There are two published books in the series, the third one is being written. I am going with the flow. As long as the story is flowing for me I will keep writing. I can honestly say that I don’t see this series as being completed in three or four books. The story and the characters are very rich. They come to life for me and demand that their story be told.

What is the inspiration for the series?
The inspiration for the series are the various Ascended Masters that I know about. Ascended Masters (also known as Enlightened Masters or Self-Realized Masters)  are not common knowledge among people, but they do exist. I am lucky to be  privy to their existence.

Is there any special meaning/lesson/message you want readers to get from your book?
Definitely! I am showing people a glimpse of what humans are capable of doing if they develop themselves spiritually.
Ascended Masters and Lightworkers are role models we can all aspire to. I promote love and respect, the code of Ahimsa which is the way of non-violence, protection of animals, and I even give ideas about vegetarian meals. You can read my books as entertainment and think of them as fantasy paranormal books or you can look deeper and learn a lot. The choice is yours.

Which character do you relate to the most?
I relate the most to the two moms. Grace and Estelle.
Grace is Jayna’s mother and Estelle is Ethan’s. They are devoted to their families, have varying degrees of psychic abilities, but they are not nearly as advanced as their offspring in Astral matters.

Are any of the characters based on real people you know?
Yes, there is definitely a Divine Mother in India who is the sister of Babaji. Both siblings are very evolved spiritual beings, and very very old.

I read that apart from your interest in Astral Travel you are also a yoga enthusiast. When did you start yoga? Why?
I started Yoga many years ago, but it was Iyengar style Hatha yoga. I discovered Kriyayoga seven years ago and it changed my life. I was always looking for that one nameless thing that would fill a void in my life and didn’t know what it was. When I found out about Kriyayoga I immediately knew that that was what I was searching for and a lot of things fell into place for me.

Tell us more about being an animal activist. Why animals? Why not anything else? the environment for example.
Oh, I definitely support environmental causes and human rights also, but animals have a special place in my heart. I support many organizations that are trying to change the world for better, put an end to child labour or slavery, call it whatever you prefer; human trafficking, fight against drugs, etc. I spend a good deal of time signing petitions and making donations every day. I am not an affluent person, but I do what I can in terms of financial aid. I think that God created the Earth, put oceans, plants and animals on it then populated it with people to give us the perfect place to learn and evolve ourselves
. The year 1700 A.D. marked the beginning of an ascending doper, an age of enlightenment. Although we have a long ways to reach enlightenment as a collective human race, my humble opinion is that animals are there to teach us compassion and help us towards enlightenment. If you see a stray dog, will you walk away or stop and make a call to the Humane Society? When the Humane Society sends you an urgent message because there was a flood somewhere in the world and animals need your help, will you delete that message or donate what you can? In this age of instant and mass communication, there is a lot that we can do to end the suffering of both people and animals. At the end of the day, people have language and can express their suffering and cry for help. Animals don’t. We have to take up the fight for them, love them and protect them. That is what makes us human beings. If you want to evolve and ascend as a human, go and help someone and while you are at it, don’t forget about the animals

.

How does being a (foster)parent affect your writing.
I cannot talk about my fostering too much as I have signed a confidentiality agreement, but I can assure you that fostering has opened my eyes to a lot of human suffering that is going on right here in our own community. I come from a very tightknit and compassionate family, so I could never have imagined the kinds of violence that takes place in other families.
The children need our protection when their own families cannot provide it for them; my family and I are there to do exactly that. We provide a safe and loving environment to the children when they need it. As a person, fostering made me develop by leaps and bounds. I am sure that is reflected in my writing.

Do your interests in yoga, animal activism and your Economics degree affect/influence your writing? How?
Most certainly all of those things you mentioned affect and influence my writing. I am the sum of everything that I learned and experienced.
Without my yoga there wouldn’t be all the rich characters in my books. As I mentioned earlier, there really is a Divine Mother. My passion for animals is also in my books, one of the characters is a marine biologist who goes and fights dolphin hunters. This is probably the right time to mention that the annual dolphin hunts in Taiji, Japan started once again and Ric O’Barry with other animal activists are there to observe, record and try to convince the Japanese government to put a stop to this tradition.
Dolphin meat is very dangerous for human consumption because of the very high levels of mercury in it. Many children were born with extreme retardation due to dolphin meat consumption by their mothers in and around that town. I hold a BA in Economics and a certificate in Human Resources. I still have plans to do a graduate degree, but that probably won’t happen for a few more years.
The character of Estelle in the Astral Ordinance is my super mom/business woman. I can get into Estelle’s head because of my training in Economics and Human Resources. I even outlined a business plan for a chain of vegetarian restaurants that Estelle started and handed over to her son, Ethan, the hero in our series. Their mission is to teach people to eat vegetarian one day a week. Most doctors recommend this, Ethan is opening up these restaurants to make it easy for people to follow doctors’ orders and eat vegetarian. I eat vegetarian seven days a week so I am in a good position to give people ideas how to do it. All of these are in my books.

What book are you currently reading?
Currently I am reading Amanda Hocking’s last installment of the Watersong series, Elegy

If you could have dinner with anyone, past or present, fictional or real, who would it be? why?
I would like to have dinner with the Divine Mother, but then again I am not sure that she eats. We might just end up meditating together. She is one of the most enlightened souls left on Earth.

Excerpt
Kayley took a deep breath and pushed open the door, not ready for what she was about to see but needing to see with her own eyes that her Alex was not there, not coming back. She pushed the door shut behind her, not allowing her eyes to travel the room to find him. She could see the bed out of the corner of her eye and knew he was there, but she wasn’t ready to look. She leaned against the door, breathing heavily. What was she thinking? She couldn’t see him like this.
Just like that, she felt him. She felt Alex near her, and her knees almost buckled. She couldn’t explain why she felt that way, could never tell anyone why she thought he was there, but she felt his presence like she felt her own. He was part of her soul; maybe that is why she thought she could feel him here, in this room. She slid down the door and sat on the floor, her chin resting on her knees. She now could see the end of the bed and Alex’s feet sticking up under the covers. She stared at them for what seemed like an eternity, trying to get the courage to stand up and see him for the last time.
Finally, she slowly got up off of the floor. Still averting her eyes, she headed towards the bed that held the love of her life. Her breath came in shallow spurts as she tried to will herself to look at him. Her peripheral vision told her that he was laying there with his arms to his sides and the blanket pulled up to his broad chest. Kayley closed her eyes and stepped closer to the bed, reaching her hands out to grip the railing of the bed so she didn’t run into it. When her hands made contact with the cold metal rails, she sucked her breath in. Open your eyes, she willed herself. Kayley knew that opening them and looking at Alex was a life altering moment. She would never again be the same. She cracked her eyes open, his face coming into view. She willed herself to open her eyes the rest of the way, and when she finally did, she locked her eyes on Alex’s handsome face. He looked- perfect. Peaceful. There was bruising and scrapes on his face, neck, and collarbone, and his head was wrapped in gauze from his surgery, but it was him. Alex. He was laying here just like he was sleeping. His full lips were red, his dark eyelashes fanned across his cheeks. She scanned his broad shoulders and muscular chest and stomach, covered by the blanket but she knew his body like her own. She reached her hand out and touched his hand, briefly, then pulled back, shocked. How could he feel like her Alex, but not be there anymore? She stared at his left hand where the imprint was there of his wedding band, but the jewelry itself wasn’t there anymore. A sob escaped her lips as she realized why- they wouldn’t leave a wedding ring on someone who wasn’t alive anymore.

My Review

Tell us about yourself
I'm Diamond Drake, the author of three chick-lit novels; Imagined Love, For the Love of Jade (sequel), and Love's Fool. I was born and raised in Gary, IN but I now reside in northern California with my husband of seventeen years, two teenaged daughters, and two dogs.

One thing about you that's not in your bio
Diamond Drake is my pen name.

Have you always aspired to publish a novel? Which writers inspire/influence you?
Yes, I've ALWAYS wanted to publish novels! In the first grade I vowed to my granny that I would do it and I talked about it every day!

What has been the toughest criticism given to you as an author? What has been the best compliment?
The toughest criticism I ever received came from one of my editors. She basically told me I "talk" too much and needed to learn how to get to the point.
The best compliment came from a group of readers who told me they changed their lives because of something one of my characters did. I still cry when I think about that.

If you could have dinner with anyone, past or present, fictional or real, who would it be? Why?
If I could have dinner with anyone it would probably be Nicholas Sparks. I'd love to know the secret to having so many of his novels made into major movies. That has to be an amazing feeling!

What book(s) are you reading at present?
I'm currently reading Football Widows by Pat Tucker and my own novel, Love's Fool. I'm gearing up to write the sequel and need to get re-acquainted with the characters.

For the Love of Jade won the 2013 International Book Award Winner for the African American category? How was that experience for you?
Winning the 2013 International Book Award has been a great experience. It's validating in a lot of ways. And I find that readers respond differently to me as well. They're more willing to give my work a chance.

Do you think that the cover plays an important part in the buying process?
I think the cover plays a huge role in whether a reader will buy your book or not. As much we say don't judge a book by its cover, we often do.

Which of your characters do you relate to the most? Are any of them based on people you know?
The character I relate to most is definitely Jade from Imagined Love. That book was heavily based on my own life so I have a special connection with her.

What’s next for you? Any works in the making that readers should know about?
Currently, I'm working on my fourth and fifth novesl. One is the sequel to my last book and the other, Love's Choice, will introduce readers to a whole new cast of crazy characters! I love Dwight and Robin Haughton! haha

Random
Favorite season - fall.
Favorite dessert - cake!
Favorite book by another author - The Wedding by Nicholas Sparks
Favorite book that I wrote - Hmmm ... that's hard to answer. I love them all for different reasons.
Random fact - Let's see... oh, I'm absolutely terrified of opening a can of biscuits! I hate when it pops so I have my husband or daughter do it for me!

My Review

The Cover

4 stars for the cover. I love it.

It's really simple and nice. And I love the pop of colour with the red font.

The Characters

There are a lot of characters. The major ones are Elodie, Tyler & James [Love triangle]

I like Elodie. She's brutally honest. Tyler is hoooot. I love his character. He's cocky but not in a get-over-yourself-you-d*ck way. He has a smart mouth and is funny. And James. Oh sweet, loveable, charming James.

Other character's are Tatiana, a funny, party loving girl from Belarus; Heddi, a more reserved beauty from Denmark and Jelena, whom we don't know much about other than she's Russian. These 3 girls are her friends and roommates

It's so hard to pick who I want Elodie to be with. I love both James & Tyler and they do different things for her.

I think we didn't really get to meet James. His character isn't really developed.

The dynamic of Elodie & James' relationship reminds me of Joshua & Melina's in Won't Last Long

The Story

I love the story. I love how it starts. It was like watching a movie.

I love that there are no billionaires or BDSM dungeons or tatted rock stars like we see in a lot of NA books lately.

I didn't like the unnecessary constant descriptions, a lot of modelling references that didn't need to be there, too much alcohol, too little food. Too much talk about food(or lack of it).

Cliffhanger. When I got to the end, I couldn't believe it. I thought I didn't download the book fully. It definitely left me wanting more. Looking forward to the next one in the series.

I love the writing style. Olivia Besse is amazing. She writes almost effortlessly. Her writing is edgy and gritty. This is a great debut by the author

The dialogue was snappy and funny and brought the characters to life

Generally

Sometimes, I forgot I was reading about a 19 year old. I loved a lot about the book. The author's writing style reminds me of Jackie Collins.

This book contains explicit content and is not intended for younger readers!

In The News: Fifty Shades of Grey Cast

Except you live under a rock, you'll know that there's an FSOG movie in the works and everyone has been giving predictions on who would play Ana and Christian.

I personally don't believe that Fifty Shades of Grey is movie worthy but if they are going to do a movie, the should do it right.

At this point, we know that Fifty Shades Of Grey movie will be released in theaters on August 1, 2014 and will be directed by British director, Sam Taylor-Johnson.And that Dakota Johnson and Charlie Hunnam have been cast as Ana & Christian.

I was shocked about the casting to be honest. When I first heard that there was going to be a movie, the first two people who popped into my head were Henry Cavalli and Mila Kunis. Then Rachel Bilson, Emma Watson or Emma Stone for Ana Ian Somerhalder or Matt Bomer for Christian.

Trivia

Emma Watson, Lauren Watson, Shailene Woodley, Elizabeth Olsen, Imogen Poots, Alicia Vikander and Felicity Jones were considered to play Anastasia Steele before Dakota Johnson was finally cast.

Garrett Hedlund, Ryan Gosling and Chris Hemsworth turned down the role of Christian Grey, while Christian Cooke and Dominic Cooper auditioned. Charlie Hunnam was cast.

REVIEW: The Ballerina and The Fighter by Ursula Sinclair

I received a free copy courtesy of the author.

Finished: September 11, 2013

The Book
I travel through life dancing.
All I ever wanted to do was dance, as did my best friend. We'd made so many plans together, but one night an explosion changed it all. Only one of us survived, and I promised myself I'd succeed for us both. And I did, until an accident almost ruined my career, but Maze came back into my life when I needed him most. He pulled me out of the depths of my despair. But could I save him now?

I travel through life fighting.
It had always been Ivy; from the first moment I saw her leaping through the air like she had wings to lift her from the ground. But she was my dream, something I wanted more than anything else in my life. I promised myself I would stay away from her. Violence followed me everywhere and I tried to keep her far away from it. She was my point of illumination in the dark tumultuous world I lived in. But I could not stay away from her. Not when I knew she needed me. As much as I needed her. But could she accept me as I am?

My Opinion
I expected a lot more from this book and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed.

The characters and the relationships they had were underdeveloped. The romance between Maze and Ivy was too rushed and could have been better.
I couldn't connect with the story.
I think the best relationship in the book is the one between Maze and his dad.

There was a lot of repetition whenever the author switched POVs. It kind of pulled me out because I wanted to skip the parts.

I didn't like Maze, per the romance. By the second page, he was already thinking "sexy" things. By the ninth, he seemed like a leery, creepy, disturbing guy. All this within 5 minutes of meeting Ivy.
As a fighter, I loved him. I liked the fight scenes best.

The blurb makes it seem like her friend's death was important to their story. IMO, it wasn't.

I also think that the last line was unnecessary. The book could have ended blissfully without the last line.

All in all, the plot had a lot of potential and it could have done a lot better. It was an okay read.

REVIEW: The Domino Effect by Jill Elaine Hughes

Received free courtesy of the author

Finished: September 10, 2013
Rating: 3.5 stars

The Book
336 pages
ebook (mobi)

21-year-old Nancy Delaney is finishing up her third year of college when her magazine-editor roommate asks her to go review an art opening in downtown Cleveland. The artist is mysterious international playboy and eccentric Peter Rostovich, and the art is like nothing innocent, virginal Nancy has ever encountered before. Multimedia artist Rostovich has created an erotic art installation all about S&M bondage — complete with a live sculpture that’s so realistic, it gets the whole exhibit shut down by the Cleveland police.
Aspiring journalist Nancy’s nose for news smells a hot story idea, which she sells to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. But as she works to get her story, she soon becomes intimately entangled with Rostovich, who finds her irresistible. Rostovich becomes Nancy’s ticket to sexual awakening, and she soon discovers she has an appetite for bondage, too.
And there’s far more to Rostovich than just his art — he’s involved in a strange, violent criminal underworld that kidnaps Nancy and spirits her halfway around the world, where she’s held prisoner and made to serve as private Dominant-for-hire somewhere in the former Soviet Union. Will the sexual powers Rostovich helped awaken in her be Nancy’s only hope for escape?

My Opinion
Okay so I'm conflicted. I'm not sure that I really liked it but I didn't hate it.

On the plus side:
It is well written and edited. It's not just erotica - although I have to say: errmaggherd - there's a lot of suspense and mystery in the story that raises curiosity. I would love to finish the series.
There is a plot, although it becomes a bit shaky from time to time, it's mostly strong. There's consistency and it's easy to follow.

The characters are great. Nancy is a very interesting character. I like her. She's relatable in a sense. She's rediscovering who she is and the reader is making that journey with her.

On the other hand:
* I was confused about the whole Bluschencko thing but that was resolved (a little) towards the end.
* When Nancy was examining the pictures Rostovich gave her after the "interview", she said the woman in the picture was dead but she's also the same woman who was live at the exhibit.
How is this possible. Maybe I missed something.
* Nancy keeps saying that Rostovich got her into the mess she was in, even when Bluschencko said he had been watching her friend then her for months

Also I saw a lot of similarities with Fifty Shades of Grey.
- Naïve <poor> college student (woman)
- Super rich <secretive> guy with dark/shady past
- Meet by chance thanks to girl's best friend
- Studying English or something related
- Woman in early 20s

All in all I enjoyed the book.

I couldn't find any links as to where you can get the book but if you want to get a copy, you could contact the author on goodreads

REVIEW: Lesbian Crushes and Bulimia by Natasha Holme

I received this book for free courtesy of the author

Finished: September 07, 2013
Rating: 4 stars

The Book
Lesbian Crushes and Bulimia: A Diary On How I Acquired My Eating Disorder
ebook (mobi)
173 pages

Lesbian Crushes and Bulimia is a real-life diary portrayal of an obsessive nineteen year old lesbian, Natasha, whose internal homophobia, alongside infatuations with other women, bring her condemnation in both her gay and straight environments and drive her into a state of compulsive binge-eating and purging.

Edited from detailed, encoded diary entries, the story. begins in the summer of 1989. Natasha is obsessively, unrequitedly in love with her former teacher, Miss Williams, a love which she declares openly as a tattoo on her wrist. She meets Alex, a girl her own age, who questions her about the tattoo, revealing her own remarkably similar obsessive love for her former teacher, Miss Wilson. A romance blossoms between the two girls.
This is the first book to present a diary account of living as a lesbian with an eating disorder.

My Opinion
I've said before that I love memoirs. I haven't read any in the LGBT category so this is new for me.
I enjoyed it. It is fascinating and compelling.
It is basically snippets and fragments and is very informal but the author presents it in a way that works.
The diary flows easily and you're not lost in the details and it's coherent and understandable

REVIEW: Killer Rumors by Antonello Foire

Received a free copy courtesy of the author.

Finished: September 02, 2013
Rating: 1.5 stars

The Book
336 pages
ebook (PDF)
Father D’Angelo and Bakeman, two devoted priests were brutally murdered while going on one of their nightly walks. Detective Frank Rinelli is called to the case- not only due to his close friendship with the priests, but with his expertise of tracking psychotic killers.
Rinelli suddenly discovers these murders were based on a scandal that occurred several years ago at the same Church where the two murdered priests preached. And it doesn’t stop there. The list of people being murdered in connection with the scandal continues to grow until the killer has his ultimate vengeance- and the truth released.

My Opinion
I accepted this book from the author because I liked the storyline and also because the average rating on goodreads is 3.72 from 40 ratings. I was terribly disappointed.

There were a lot of things wrong with this book:
*The homicide detectives, and their LT. were like rookies when it comes to basic investigation skills. (When Rinelli and his partner were interviewing the nuns, they could have just asked them to list all the people involved in the scandal instead of going to visit them one million times.)
They were also missing a lot of blatantly obvious information.
* A lot of details, were stated, then completely changed pages later.
* A lot of the scenes are definitely not humanly possible.
Although this is a work of fiction, it's also a police procedural and should be as close to reality as possible.
* Repetition of words. A lot of times, a pronoun or an article would have done the job.
The sentences are too long with unnecessary details and descriptions.
* Wrong word choices, typos and switching tenses made the whole book a lot more annoying to read.
There are basic grammar mistakes
and words used in the wrong context.

This book had a lot of potential. It has a great storyline. Better editing would have done a lot for this book.

I honestly can't recommend this book to anyone but if you want to form an opinion yourself, you can

REVIEW: The Divine Dantes: Squirt Guns In Hades by Andrew Barger

Received free courtesy of the author

Finished: August 31, 2013
Rating: 3 stars

*The Book
If "The Divine Comedy" and "Catcher in the Rye" had a love child, "The Divine Dantes: Squirt Guns in Hades" would be it. The novel is the first in a trilogy of laugh-out-loud books paralleling Dante Alighieri's classic poem, "The Divine Comedy," where the characters of The Inferno are encountered in modern times with surprising results.
At the center is Eddie, a young rocker who is heartbroken after his girlfriend, Beatrice, leaves for Venice. This not only ends their relationship, but also the world's greatest two- person rock band. At Beatrice's request, Virgil-their erstwhile manager-cum-travel-agent guides Eddie to Europe to meet her without Eddie being in on the secret.
Will Eddie want to see Beatrice? Will the band get back together? And if it does, can Eddie settle on a name for it?
Read this literary, rock, love story today!

My Opinion
The first 90(or so) pages of this book were bad. I had to drag myself through them. I was going to rate it 1.5 stars.

I decided to give the book a chance and kept on reading. It became better (thank God).

I started to like Edward just a liiiitle bit. Virgil is just a loveable but quiet character. I really want to know more about Bea.

Like I said, the book got better and then it just ended. I was annoyed(in a good way) that it just ended. You know how you're eating delicious ice cream from the tub and it just finishes and you weren't expecting it to. Yeah. That's how I feel.
It left me wanting more. Which is why I'm interested in reading the next book.

REVIEW: The Siren's Tale by Anne Carlisle

Wow. just wow.

I received a free copy courtesy of the author

Finished: August 29, 2013
Rating: 4 stars

*The Book
The sexual exploits of sirens in human form make for charming erotic-paranormal entertainment and spicy inspiration for YA/NA readers. Female power and intellect clash with rustic superstition, with deadly consequences, as the siren Cassandra seeks a life of fiery passion in the Old West. The consequences affect her lovers and descendants, owing to a curse that deflects the sirens' paranormal powers toward the dark side. The contemporary frame poses questions: Will the youngest siren learn how to live and love? Can a siren's voracious appetite for adventurous passion be reconciled with core human values?

*It is the second book in the Homeschooling Trilogy but can be read as a standalone novel

My Opinion
Wow. Wow. Wow.
I first loved this biok just because it isn't about werewolves and/or vampires.
This book is amazing. The storytelling is amazing. I was so drawn into the book that I couldn't stop(or sleep) until I finished it.

I felt like some was telling ME a story. talking directly to me.

The way she intertwined the POVs and the time periods was just so amazing.

This is definitely one of the best paranormal books I've read.

My Opinion
I really struggled with rating the book. I was trying to decide between 3 and 4 stars.

I didn't looove this book but I enjoyed it and I understood what the author was trying to pass across.

There were a lot of twists and turns but not so much that it became annoying. This book was very emotional. There were funny moments, sad moments, happy ones, annoying, jaw dropping and sappy ones.

The characters were real. The storyline and plot were on point.

I think a major thing that worked for the book was how relatable and real it was. It's something that most of the targeted audience can relate to. How people (women especially) put up with sh*t that they don't have to.

REVIEW: Love Me If You Dare by Kate Laurens

Received free courtesy of the author

Finished: August 20, 2013
Rating: 3 stars

The Book
This is the second book in the Safe Haven series. It can be read as a stand alone novel.
It's been three years since Kaylee Sawyer has been home - to the alcoholic mother she can't handle,  painful memories of her sister Ella and the guilt she's carried for years.
About to enter her final year of college, she is determined to come to terms with the mess of her past - and to ignore the guy whose single kiss has been tattooed into her mind forever.

Dylan McKay is still golden haired and dangerous, the flame Kaylee was always afraid to touch for fear of getting burnt. But despite the damage that's been done, she finds that she still can't stay away from the one person who accepted her the way she was.

My Opinion
This is a good, quick and easy read.

The book can actually be a stand alone because it makes sense and there are no gaping holes in the storyline. I didn't even know it wasn't a stand alone until I finished. It actually makes for a bit of a mystery/suspense if you haven't read the first book.

There are few characters and they are relatable. The story is easy to follow.

There's some heavy(sexy) stuff in it but not too much to put you off if you're squeamish about that sort of thing.

For mature readers 17+

REVIEW: Faith, Hope and Murder by Elise M Stone

I received this book free courtesy of the author

Finished on: 6th August, 2013

Rating: 3.5 stars

The Book
This is the first book in the series and is a debut novel by the author.

We follow Faith Andersen, web designer, who is unsure about God and is now suddenly unemployed.
Faith has promised to help Ursula, a German immigrant, prove that her fiancee (Michael) is innocent and not responsible for the murder of Carlos Fuentes who before his death sold Mexicans dreams of a better life in America.

Enter Pastor John Menard, divorcee and father of one, who wants to update his church's website for a little bit of romance.

My Opinion
This is a nice, well written book with a great plot. The characters are distinct. We see most of the story from Faith's POV. John and Hope's POV come up sometimes but it's never confusing.

The story line is easy to follow. The pace is good and steady. Not too fast. Not too slow. There's no rush. Everything is well thought out.

I liked that it's not preachy, yet there's the underlying theme of faith/belief in God.

All in all, Stone put together a well written piece with everything you’d see in a regular mystery.

Recommended for readers who are squeamish but enjoy a good mystery. And who don't mind a bit of religion

REVIEW: The Lily Branch by Carole Pitt

I received this book free courtesy of the author

Rating: 2.5 stars

"Elizabeth stared at Jerome. Even in death, she appeared to be posing for the camera."

The Book
In the midst of tackling her personal problems, DI Elizabeth Jewell investigates her biggest case, the murder of top fashion model Lily Jerome.
After a second body turns up on an isolated farm, Jewell searches for a link between the crimes.

My Thoughts
This book fell very flat. There was no excitement in the chase. It didn't feel right. It just didn't flow. I was terribly disappointed by the book. I expected better.

The writing isn't bad. The book is well written and the sentences coherent but I wasn't getting any feeling off the book. I was easily distracted. The details were
often irrelevant. Too much information that didn't add anything to the story.

Too much was happening and the end of the book felt too rushed.

It wasn't a terrible read but it could have been a lot better.
